METRO VANCOUVER — Police are warning people to be cautious in two north Burnaby areas where bears have been spotted in the past two days.

Burnaby bear sightings prompt warning:

Burnaby RCMP said in a press release that they received a number of reports about 4 p.m. Tuesday about bear sightings near Halifax Street and Burnwood. The bear was then reported near Montecito Elementary School and the 2600-block of Bainbridge Street.

Burnaby RCMP and conservation officers were unsuccessful in locating the bear. One of the last sightings had the animal trying to cross the Lougheed Highway.

On Wednesday about 10 a.m. the Burnaby RCMP received a report that a larger black bear was spotted in the 3600-block of Kensington.

Burnaby RCMP did extensive patrols in the area and were unable to locate the bear or a vehicle that may have struck it.

Police are asking residents in these areas to put all garbage inside their garage to prevent bears from being attracted.
