August MLS real estate listings down across Canada
Vancouver Sun
Published: Tuesday, September 30, 2008OTTAWA – The number of properties listed via the MLS systems of real estate boards in Canada retreated in August from record levels in the previous four months, according to statistics released Tuesday by The Canadian Real Estate Association.
With new listings down from the recent peak, the resale housing market is stabilizing in most provinces, according to the news release.
Seasonally adjusted MLS national sales activity eased by 3.8 per cent on a month-over-month basis to 37,118 units in August 2008.
It was down from July levels in all provinces except Alberta, where the number of homes trading hands edged marginally higher by 0.2 per cent.
Transactions were also down compared to last year’s elevated levels in August in nearly all local housing markets.
The year-over-year decline in sales activity stood out in some of Canada’s priciest and most active houing markets.
Lower activity in Vancouver, Fraser Valley, the Okanagan region, Vancouver Island, Victoria, Calgary, and Toronto contributed significantly to the year-over-year decline in national sales activity.
